LAKE BABAKAN


An ancient tribe of Betawi still living in harmony in South Jakarta.


Situ Babakan, is a cultural heritage located in Srengseng Sawah, Jagakarsa district, South Jakarta. Situ in Sundanese means lake and indeed villages Situ Babakan flanked by two lakes. In 2004 this area used as a Betawi Village Center in conjunction with the anniversary of Jakarta the 474th due to very many Betawi original village in this area. This heritage area covers 165 acres, consists of the People's Gardens, the Betawi community village as well as two lakes flanking this township.

Communities in the region are developing agriculture and fisheries, as well as assist in Situ Babakan afforestation areas. Besides it in this area can be witnessed daily life of local communities as well as fish farming in cages located along the edge of the Lake, fishing, farming, trade, handicraft making and the making of traditional foods such as Dodol Betawi and Bir Pletok.

There are more than 100 floating net cages placed in the lake to breed different kinds of fish, including carp, tilapia, and several species of ornamental fish. The lake is a place for aquatic recreational activities, such as rafting, and fishing. The garden surrounding the lake is cultivated with fruit plants, such as banana, coconut, and guava.

Besides it in this area are also frequently held art events such as Cokek Dance, Mask Dance, Lenong and Ondel-ondel on an open stage (live) every Saturday and Sunday. In the event any visitor normally can participate to interact in the implementation of such events, such as joined the dance or to comment on lenong players in action.
